The 31Bits staff in Uganda has moved into a new house! Danielle, Nick and Julie share a cozy four bedroom cottage in Gulu. It even has a fruit and vegetable garden and enough space for a new dog?
(Oh please can we get one?)

Well hello! My name’s Carly and I grew up here–Sailor Pride! Now, I am going to be a junior at Brown University way over in little old Rhode Island. I love a good watermelon, playing beach volleyball, and SoCal weather. This summer I am one of the Marketing/PR interns and am loving being on the 31 Bits team. Who wouldn’t want to help women, play with cool jewelry, and bounce creative ideas off of each other? Also, it’s so inspiring to be around people with such big hearts!
Here’s how it works:
1. Pack 31 Bits in your suitcase
2. Snap a photo
3. Email your photo & location to: [email protected]
4. Get your friends to ‘Like’ your photo on Facebook
5. Win a prize from 31 Bits for getting the most Likes!
To send your creative summer traveling photos or if you have any questions, email us at: [email protected]
HAPPY TRAVELS!
(The Acholi Language)
In Northern Uganda, the native people speak Luo. Greetings are very important to the Acholi people and Julie and I are slowly beginning to learn the basics of Luo. Here is a phrase that we use often.
Kop anno? {kōp angō}
- How are you?
Kop peke. {kōp pā}
- I am fine.
Yesterday we celebrated the marriage of 31 Bits founder, Kallie Dovel and her husband Adam Thomson! They were married in a beautiful ceremony by the sea! It was the perfect day, and we couldn’t be more excited for them!
We love you guys- have a great time in Jamaica!
A rooster found its way into the 31Bits compound today. It is not uncommon for some of the ladies to bring food or animals to sell, but this guy seemed to come out of nowhere. We will have pet rooster for a while until he finds a home (or becomes dinner).

Malia’s the name and fun is my game. I am a Junior studying Communications and Marketing at the University of San Diego. Being a native of the scorching hot Mohave Desert in Arizona, I am more than thrilled to be in the beautiful Orange County this summer interning for 31 Bits! I’m a coffee addict, art enthusiast, music junkie, fashion and photography lover, movie fanatic, and beach dweller. On my off days, you can usually find me blogging at the nearest Starbucks or sipping on tea at home watching reruns of Modern Family or The Office. I love going places where I have never been before, which can be anywhere from coffee shops, to boutiques, to exploring foreign lands. I was seeking an internship that was exciting, inspiring, and allowed me to explore my creative commons – which is why 31 Bits is the perfect place for me to spend my summer. I am constantly empowered by this movement and the inspiring women in Uganda, along with the amazing women I have the privilege of working with here in Costa Mesa.
Other fun facts: I love everything turquoise and will never turn down an invitation to fro yo or anything involving chocolate.
