Change The Way You Buy

September 30th, 2011 | Comments (0)

Apple pie, pumpkin patches, crisp leaves, and cool air… Autumn has officially begun. (Well this might be a stretch here in Southern California, but you get the point…) This change in the season also marks the beginning of crowded malls, lists for Santa, and endless online shopping.

This is the time to remember, there is power in our purchases.

Throughout the month of September, we’ve been shining a spotlight on our partership with NOT FOR SALE. NFS is an organization creating new futures for survivors of human trafficking & communities at risk of modern-day slavery. We teamed up with NFS and created an exclusive line of jewelry, inspired and designed using colors and symbolism from Not For Sale. For every piece sold, the profits are donated directly back to their campaigns and international programs.

Wearing this jewelry goes even further than supporting a cause; it’s supporting a movement. 31 Bits and NFS are part of a movement promoting conscious consumerism. As consumers, we have an opportunity to make conscious decisions about the products we buy. With the busiest shopping season of the year approaching, what better time to consider the power we have in our purchases. At 31 Bits, we are huge fans of Not For Sale‘s online store. Here you can find products produced by other fair trade companies with similar missions. Whether it’s apparel, chocolate, coffee, or accessories, we can all play a part in ending modern-day slavery, simply by changing the way we buy.

PURCHASE FAIRLY. PROMOTE FREEDOM.

Designer Spotlight: Meet Doreen

September 27th, 2011 | Comments (1)

At eighteen years old, Angwec Dorine is the youngest beneficiary at 31 Bits. She joined our program in July, seven months pregnant and HIV positive. She was forced to drop out of school last term when she became pregnant with her first child. Her english is fantastic, and she is saving her money to put herself through her last few years of education.

Three days ago Doreen gave birth. This is her gorgeous daughter, Mercy, only  a few hours after being born.

Ugandan women have a lot of babies. Sometimes they name their babies very strange names. Other times they name their babies after you. It’s the best feeling ever. Here is Owachgiu Nick, Atim Fibi’s new son.

Not For Sale: Designer Spotlight

September 23rd, 2011 | Comments (0)

This season, 31 Bits teamed up with Not For Sale to create an exclusive line of jewelry to PROMOTE FREEDOM. We want to shine the spotlight on one of the makers of this special line: Okwero Margaret.

Like many moms, one of Margaret’s favorite things to do is tell stories to her children. You see, when Margaret was a young girl, her parents were killed by the rebels. Her favorite memories are from when her parents were alive. As a result of a horrific, unfair war, a young child (along with many others) grew up without her parents. Margaret has a different plan for her children. Through her job at 31 Bits, she is able to send her kids to school, and provide them with food, housing, clothing, and healthcare. She loves spending time with her children, giving them advice on how to succeed in life. Her dream is to one day build a house for her and her family to live in.

We are WATCHING FREEDOM MULTIPLY. Margaret is making FAIR wages and living a FREE life, and is passing it on to her children.

Margaret made the TANGERINE NECKLACE from our 31 Bits + Not For Sale line. You can check it out here. A portion of every sale goes directly to supporting Not For Sale’s programming! Learn more about what they do here.

PURCHASE FAIRLY. PROMOTE FREEDOM.
