Caring For Our Communities

December 20th, 2012 | Comments (0)

Giving is our Rhythm at 31 Bits this Holiday season.

From toy drives to gift giving to sharing meals, the Holiday season provides all kinds of opportunities to give back to people in your community. As our beneficiaries in Uganda have been given new opportunities, we are so encouraged by how they have chosen to give back to their community. Here are a handful of ways they have chosen to care for their neighbors and families…

Atim Fibi is one of our expert jewelry makers and is beyond generous with sharing her talent. Whenever another woman is having a rough time with an assignment, Fibi is the first to step up and help. She’s generous with her time, and helps the other women cut their paper precisely and teaches them how to roll perfect beads.

Lakot Jackline blesses both her neighbors and the women of 31 Bits by giving away bananas from her banana tree. She loves giving bananas away to everyone!!!!

Akite Juliet has an amazing voice, and volunteers at her church by singing in the choir. She loves to worship and because of her desire and ability to sing, she is able to bless others.

We are beyond impressed and encouraged by how Lakot Rose has chosen to spend her time. Rose is passionate about children and caring for the health of the women around her. By using what she’s learned in the health education class at 31 Bits, Rose hosts a monthly nutrition class for other women in the community. She instructs women on nourishment and how to properly feed their children. Because of Rose’s contribution, these women have become a tight knit group and begun to pool their money together to better provide for their children.

We are encouraged and inspired by how the women of 31 Bits have chosen to give back to their neighbors, and we want to encourage you to do the same! From your mailman to your barista to your next-door neighbor, don’t forget to grab a quick little gift or a Christmas card to brighten up their Holiday season. And beyond that, begin thinking of the ways you can give back to your community in the New Year!

Gifts We Love to Give!

December 18th, 2012 | Comments (0)

Having a problem finding last-minute gifts that are unique, thoughtful and won’t break the bank? Here’s some gifts WE will be giving this Christmas!

Sari Bari :: makes vibrant home decor and accessories out of traditional Indian saris.  We love the intricate fabrics, bright colors, and their bohemian flair

Invisible Children Mend Bags :: Invisible Children has partnered with Mend to create a special line of bags, handmade by women in Uganda that have been affected by the LRA conflict. They have several styles, all amazing quality and durability.

Sseko Sandals :: A sandal company based in Uganda, Sseko generates an income for young women to pursue their education and continue on to university. Each pair of sandals comes with interchangeable straps, that you can tie different ways- depending on the occasion!

Darling Magazine :: Not only is it witty, easy to read, and filled with pretty pictures, Darling inspires and motivates readers to take risks and follow their dreams. We can’t put it down!

I AM ::  These yoga bags are hand-woven by Maya women living in impoverished communities in the Highlands of Guatemala.

Project 7 :: Awesome products like gum, mints and coffee that make it an easy way for people to make a difference. Stocking stuffers, anyone?

Sharing Meals this Holiday Season

December 17th, 2012 | Comments (0)

Giving is our Rhythm at 31 Bits this Holiday season, so we’re sharing all the ways you can make giving part of YOUR every day rhythm.

One of our favorite parts of the holidays is the food! Sharing meals is the best way to bring your family and friends together. This holiday season, we want to challenge you to make a meal for someone else in your community! Whether it’s dropping off some goodies to help a neighbor out, or inviting them into your home to share a meal, keep in mind that food brings people together!

And…it’s just the same with the ladies of 31 Bits Uganda! Whether it’s at our headquarters or in each other’s homes, sharing meals with family and friends is a common occurrence. At the 31 Bits headquarters, the designers share meals with each other Monday through Thursday. Beans, posho, cassava, and sweet tea, are always enjoyed in the company of friends and children. On Fridays, our Livelihoods Programming Manager, Gladies, visits various designers’ homes to see how they are doing, and these ladies never fail to impress us with their cooking and hospitality skills. They won’t let a visitor leave until they have blessed them with a full stomach! At home, the ladies work hard to provide nutritious food for their family and often invite neighbors over to share. Their hard work is always rewarded when they are able to sit and enjoy a meal with the people they love.
