The Uganda Team :: Get To Know Julie

April 9th, 2013 | Discussion (0)

Meet Julie! She joined the Uganda team 2 months ago as the Director of Operations and we absolutely love her!! We think you will too!

Where are you from: Costa Mesa, CA

What is your position: I’m the Director of Operations. I oversee the process of every Bits design- from pieces of paper to final product. I also manage our wonderful Operations Managers as they do quality control and mentor our beneficiaries.

What has been the hardest thing about moving across the world? Moving across the world is surreal to say the least. I lived in Seattle when I was hired, so packing my car with everything I owned and driving away from people and a city I had fallen in love with for four years was certainly difficult. But now that I am in Uganda, I would say the hardest ting is learning new cultural norms and values. Its difficult and thrilling all at the same time- but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Things you’ve learned since moving to Uganda: I have learned a lot since I have arrived: how to properly tie a baby on my back, how to drive a boda boda, how to barter in the public market, how to dance ‘like an Acholi lady’, and how good development, like being done at 31 Bits, can truly empower and change ones life.

Favorite food: I keep it simple – beans, rice, and guacamole. Lucky for me, Uganda is great at this dish.

Favorite design from the Spring collection: Necklace: I love the kooky look of the Razzle Dazzle. Bracelet: Half Moon in pink & tangerine.

Bits Of The Week :: The Windsor

April 1st, 2013 | Discussion (0)

The 31 Bits Windsor necklace is our “Bits Of The Week”! Deep blue beads transcend into light blue delicate beads, creating an amazing ombre effect! We love pairing the Windsor with stripes, but it truly looks great with everything!

A Day In The Life :: Joyce

March 28th, 2013 | Discussion (0)

We’re blessed to work with over 100 women in Uganda who can wake up every day surrounded by optimism, community, endless laughter, creativity, family, unplanned dance parties, sharing stories, and hope for bright futures. Every week we’ll be featuring a different 31 Bits Designer, and giving you a peak into their world!

Aciro Joyce lives in the small town of Kirombe, with 8 of her 9 children. Her oldest daughter, Brenda, lives nearby with her husband and 3 year old son. Joyce enjoys spending time with her children, and is thankful that she can now afford to send them to school. She anticipates graduating from 31 Bits and purchasing land to farm beans to sell in the local market.

Joyce has been with 31 Bits since the beginning, and we can’t imagine our family without her. We love her positivity, determination, and beautiful smile!
