Auma Florence

September 26th, 2010 | Discussion (0)

Proverbs 31:19 “She’s skilled in the crafts of home and hearth, diligent in homemaking.”

Auma Florence is what you might call a “Jack of all Trades.” Before joining the 31 Bits crew, she spent her days creating crafts and artwork to sell at the market as a way of providing for her family and putting 4 of her 7 children through school. Although she had the necessary skills to earn a living, working with 31 Bits has given her the consistency of a salary that she never had in the market.  This 45-year-old widow has mastered the arts of crocheting, sewing, jewelry making, and other local skills, making her a valuable addition to our already talented designers.

Besides making artwork, Florence has also designed a new form of clay stove to be used inside homes while still allowing the smoke to exit the hut, preventing lung problems. She has installed two in her home and continues to make them for her neighbors and friends for a small fee. The 31 Bits beneficiaries have directly benefited from this skill as she has recently crafted one on the compound enabling the ladies to purchase lunch that is cooked for them daily.

Florence still enjoys creating needle-points and sweaters in her spare time and is a great example of using her skills and abilities to help and provide for others.

The face behind Elasticity

September 24th, 2010 | Discussion (0)

You may know Tenley from ABC’s hit shows “The Bachelor” or “Bachelor Pad”, but what you may not know is that this bubbly TV personality has a heart for Uganda!

Here’s a little Q & A with our favorite TV Show contestant:

Why are you involved with 31 Bits? I completely believe in what 31 bits is all about! These women behind 31 bits have such great hearts and are changing other women’s lives in another country and even changing a community! I believe that the jobs and the knowledge that 31Bits provide to the women in Uganda brings a message of hope! The message of hope is something I want to spread anywhere and everywhere I can! I also have fallen in love with this jewlery, and I can’t get enough of it! Not only is the jewlery beautiful, but it’s incredible quality, it’s handmade!!!

What excites you about the Elasticity campaign: I am so excited about the Elasticity campaign because of what that word means, and what it means to me! The word elasticity means to be stretched, to be flexible, and it also means returning to form after strain. I have experienced an extreme amount of being stretched in my own personal life in several ways, facing strain, and not always being happy with having to be so flexible with my life, but because of this, I have grown and I have been made even stronger, and I have been shaped for the better. The Elasticity jewlery is beautiful, I love having so many options of how to wear it… bracelets, necklaces, headbands, even belts! I love the colors and I love layering. But when I wear them I also know there is a special meaning and rememberance behind the word Elasticity! It gives me confidence and encourages me to allow myself to be stretched and be made even stronger!

Story time with Obita Margaret

September 21st, 2010 | Discussion (2)

Meet “Obita”.

She is the resident comedian of the 31 Bits compound. She is loud, quirky, and LOVES to tell stories… only problem is, her stories are in Luwo, the local language.

Obita now has English lessons twice a week with one of our amazing Ugandan project managers, Gladies. Soon Obita’s jokes, stories and little remarks will be in English! We can’t wait.

Meet Anirwot Lillian

September 16th, 2010 | Discussion (0)

Lillian’s smile can light up a room and her genuine personality draws people to her. Despite her 22 years of age, she is one of the group leader and leads many women much older than herself. She is kind hearted and always willing to help. As a single mom, she has an inner strength that is seen in her friendly and intentional interactions with others. Lillian is very grateful for her job and 31 Bits and hopes to start her own business so that she can put her son through school.
