We teamed up with a Javanese entrepreneur named Ignatius who specializes in 3D drawings and jewelry design. He believes in fair, ethical business. “I believe when you are willing to pay more for products, you’ll get good quality products. You’ll be able to hire artisans who are skilled and you’ll be able to bring in people with good attitudes about their work.” Ignatius pays his artisans more than double what they were making at any other jewelry manufacturer.
31 Bits teamed up with Ignatius to bring skilled artisans into the opportunity of a lifetime. We’re working with Javanese artisans who have spent years studying and perfecting the craft of making jewelry from brass. Each of them spent years working in factories where the work was inconsistent and they were paid poorly. By partnering with Ignatius, the artisans are able to work full-time, allowing them to provide for their families, send their kids to school, and put money into savings. For these skilled artisans, it’s not just about making money, it’s about doing something they love. From the first cut of brass to the soldering and sanding to the final polish, the long and intricate process of creating a piece of jewelry is creative, expressive, and fulfilling.
Our Program Provides:
Safe and Joyful Working Conditions
The Bali Workshop is on a beautiful property filled with lush foliage, plenty of shade, and the cutest miniature Pomeranian pup named Mochi. The workshop is filled with quality materials, excellent tools, and the necessary protective supplies. One minute, the room is filled with silent concentration, the buzz of polishing, and the clicks of hand tools, and the next minute, it’s full of jokes and chatter and laughter. We think it’s perfect.
We are committed to upholding the fair living wages of every place we work. Every piece of jewelry is paid for at a fair, agreed upon price. The artisans make a sustainable monthly salary that allows them to provide for their families and save for their futures.
Access to the Global Market
Indonesia is rich with beautiful resources and incredible talent, but corruption in the supply chain and poor infrastructure has limited their access to the global market. We’re able to provide our artisans with an opportunity to get their art in front of you, our customers who value how your stuff is made.
A Family Atmosphere
One of our artisans, Mahfud, couldn’t have said it better: “
We’re not just friends, we have become like a family.” We value friendship among our artisans and believe everyone deserves to feel known. Having a strong support system is one of the things they value most about working together. When one person is struggling, whether at work or personally, the other artisans lift him up.
Although the market for metal jewelry has decreased in Indonesia, these dedicated artisans continued to master their skill. We are honored to help them preserve their art form by designing pieces that give their traditional techniques a modern twist.
Investing into Communities
Providing fair incomes has a ripple effect. Our artisans use their incomes to take care of their family and community. Our team has begun research to explore how our artisans and team can invest back into the communities of Bali and Java where our artisans have roots.
