Madé is an artist in everything he does, and spends his time doing things he is passionate about. He has worked in ceramics for his whole career. He worked for a large ceramics company for over a decade, but decided to go off on his own so he could have his own studio where he could teach classes and pour passion into his art. He told us: “My work isn’t about the money...I’m in it for the heart. This is how I see beauty. I’m in it for being with people and teaching people. That’s what I care about.” He wanted his studio to be an inspiring place to work, so he designed and built an open-air wall with woven cording. The studio is filled with natural light, illuminating the walls lined with students’ artwork from over the years.
His specialty is hand thrown ceramics and glazing. Madé believes in doing everything completely by hand because it comes from the heart and makes each piece unique. He is very in tune with the entire ceramics process. He creates his own custom glazes, including a sand glaze used throughout many of our products. He uses sand from Bali and loves that there will be a piece of Bali in homes across the world.
Madé is warm, kind, and generous. It’s important to him to feel relaxed and in tune every time he sits down to create something. He told us, “to be able to do pottery, you also have to do yoga!”. His work comes from passion and joy, never stress. When he’s not teaching or making ceramics, you will find him farming produce in his yard. He specializes in tomatoes, watermelon, and chiles. Everything is completely organic, and he’s the head of the local organic farmer’s community. Whenever we visit Madé’s studio, he always serves us a plate of the most yummy watermelon and tomatoes!
