Think About It...
Everything you buy either has a positive or negative impact in the world.
Everything has a supply chain, and every supply chain has real people behind it. If the price tag of an item is too low, there’s a high chance someone along the way wasn’t paid or treated fairly. A decade ago, few consumers gave this a second thought, but we’re proud to be one of the pioneers to pave the way for ethical products, and we’re even more excited you’re reading this right now –chances are you wandered on our site because you care too.
We combined our love for people, fashion, design and travel to create accessories and home goods that drive meaningful change in the world. Our products are thoughtfully designed and ethically made. We collaborate with some of the most skilled artisans around the world by providing them with dignified job opportunities and giving them access to the global market. Paying fair and sustainable wages to our artisans is just the beginning of what we do. We believe in providing safe and joyful working conditions, a family-like atmosphere, and an environment where every artisan feels known. We believe quality work is a result of artisans who are being cared for as individuals. In a nutshell, we believe how your stuff is made matters.
We called the company 31 Bits because Proverbs 31 describes a diligent woman providing and caring for her family using her gifts and talents. Oh, and the “bits” comes from our original and bestselling jewelry that uses beads made out of "bits" of paper!

is all about
Ethical Working Conditions
We ensure every workshop we partner with provides an environment that is safe, clean, and joyful. Our workshops are filled with quality materials, excellent tools, and the necessary protective supplies.
We are committed to upholding the fair living wages of every place we work. Every product we purchase is paid for at a fair, agreed upon price. Our goal is for artisans to make a sustainable monthly salary that enables them to provide for their families and save for their futures.
Most of the materials we use are sourced in the countries we work in. We look for the best quality materials in each place, and build long-lasting relationships with those vendors. Supporting local businesses generates more job opportunities and healthier economies for communities.
Access to the Global Market
We’ve traveled all over the world and met with some of the most incredible artisans. We’ve explored countries that are rich with beautiful resources and incredible talent, but unfortunately corruption in the supply chain and poor infrastructure has limited artisans’ access to the global market. We’re able to provide artisans with an opportunity to get their art in front of you, our customers who value how your stuff is made.
A Family Atmosphere
One of our artisans, Mahfud, couldn’t have said it better: “We’re not just friends, we have become like a family.” We value friendship among our artisans and believe everyone deserves to feel known. Having a strong support system is one of the things they value most about working together. When one person is struggling, whether at work or personally, the other artisans lift her/him up. We know every artisan by name and consider them part of our family.
We’ve been able to take age-old practices and give them a modern twist. Many of our artisan partners have spent years mastering their skills. Through 31 Bits, they now have a place to sell their meaningful work and tell stories of their heritage. And guess what? That means you get access to unique artisan-made goods that are not only driving positive change, but truly tell a story of the maker.
We value caring for our artisans financially, mentally, physically, and emotionally. This goes far beyond a paycheck. We provide our artisans with microfinancing opportunities and mentorship. We partner with a variety of organizations and individuals in the countries we work in that provide health care and treatment, counseling, financial education, and more. We believe quality work is a result of artisans who are being cared for as individuals.
Our goals for each artisan go far beyond buying their work. We teach our artisans how to dream bigger for their lives, and then help them pursue those dreams. Whether it’s saving to go back to school or opening up their own business, we help pave the road to get there.
